When her young nephew hears a sermon in Cairo encouraging religious war, Nadia Kamel, long-time assistant to the legendary Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine, takes it upon herself to acquaint him with the history of his maternal grandmother Maria (Naela). Incorporating footage of visits by Maria and her husband to relatives in Italy, Israel, and Palestine, this documentary tells the story of a remarkable woman who is part Jewish, part Christian, part Muslim—and all at once a feminist, a communist, an Italian and an Arab. Her history poignantly reveals the tensions and disfigurements brought about in a culture forced to accommodate the arbitrary boundaries of politics. A tale of humanity, tolerance, and diversity.

"SALATA BALADI - an egyptian salad": A Home Movie, in the True Sense

In the opening sequence of Nadia Kamel's documentary Egyptian Salad (Salata Baladi) the director's sister Dina takes her son Nabeel to his first Eid. During prayer the ten-year old's gestures are still out-of-sync with those of his fellow worshippers. In response to the mullah's sermon appealing to close ranks (since "they" want to wipe out "us"), the director is prompted to offer her nephew an alternative to the dominant post-9/11 'Clash of Civilizations' rhetoric. It is this urgency and necessity to tell a personal, closer-to-life story that drives and motivates this 105 minute family fresco.
With her mother Mary as an accomplice, Kamel devises a project. Nadia will film Nabeel's grandma as she explains to her grandson the complex and colorful story of their cultural, ethnic and religious roots. She will tell the tale of the circumstances that led to a series of migrations and conversions, causing Nabeel to be a blend of Egyptian, Italian, Palestinian, Lebanese, Russian, Caucasian, Turkish and Spanish origins; with Muslim, Christian, as well as Jewish backgrounds But Mary — who willingly, affectionately and lovingly plays the role of protagonist-educator-narrator — has a fantasy project of her own. In the course of the making of this film she will attempt to take Nabeel on a journey to those relatives who left their Egyptian homeland.
At first their trip to Italy seems merely a happy reunion of a family that has been separated for all too long. Their visit is punctuated by some funny comments on cultural misunderstanding. For instance, the fact that pork is "haram" doesn't prevent Nabeel from ordering Nadia to buy a roasted pig-head. However, soon Mary's voyage to Italy reveals the real reasons for her parents' and brother's displacement. They were living happily in Egypt, but it was Nasser's post-war policy that was hostile towards non-Arab Egyptians that forced them to leave. And neither their consecutive statelessness nor immigration to Italy was smooth or painless.
Mary's second journey is pivotal in this intimate drama. Part of her Egyptian-Jewish family immigrated to Israel. There has been no contact with them for over half a century. Everyone has always remained silent about this branch of the family. Even some of Mary's closest friends were totally unaware of her Jewish roots and Israeli relatives. The official boycott of Israel by Arab nations may have been abandoned by Egypt in 1980, but the popular boycott is still firmly in place. More than 30 years after Sadat made his first visit to Israel, the idea of travelling there — or even to the Occupied Territories — is still an absolute taboo for most Egyptians.
Mary, who has been a journalist, activist, pacifist and communist (something for which she has been imprisoned three times for a total period of seven years) has always actively supported the Palestinian cause. However painful, this automatically implied boycotting of her own Israeli family since 1948. For this project she has decided to make a giant leap, a move that will demand a huge amount of courage. But she is not afraid to expose herself, or to put herself in a socially and politically vulnerable position. As the filmmaker soon comes to realize, that which really prevents Mary from pursuing her fantasy project is that she does not want to betray the Palestinian people. In a deeply moving scene her Gaza-based 'sister' wholeheartedly endorses Mary's project to visit the Holy Land.
What follows is one of the most powerful sequences of the film. The mise-en-scene is simple, but all the more effective. Mary and her husband Saad (who is also an eminent writer and activist) sit side by side. Both face the camera. We all know that their journey to Israel is bound to cause an avalanche of unpleasant consequences. Friends will be shocked. Some might even turn their backs on them. There's bound to be lots of bureaucratic hassle and red tape.
And then, suddenly, Mr. Kamel makes this overwhelmingly disarming statement: "We have to be one". All the earlier considerations suddenly evaporate, becoming mere trifles. For their entire joint life the couple has shared the same dreams, the same convictions and beliefs. They have agreed on everything ("with the exception of the subject of cigarettes", Mary remarks with a smile). So what really matters is that they have to be together on this big project as well. So when Mr. Kamel says he'll start the procedure to get the necessary permissions and visa, we cannot interpret this as anything else than a beautiful and intensely moving declaration of love. Grand Cinema!
In a wonderful coda to the scene Mary accompanies Saad down the corridor. This is the beginning of what will become a long and demanding paper-work procedure with no guaranteed outcome, to which the director adds a dash of suspense as we notice a Hitchcock poster on their way out. In a consecutive bird's-eye shot taken from up in their apartment we see Mr. Kamel walking down the alley, all alone on his way to face bureaucracy and prejudice.
Although Mary, Saad and Nadia will eventually get their visa, Mary's fantasy project will remain only partially realized. Nabeel isn't able to join them. His Palestinian father and his Gaza registration automatically makes him persona non grata in Israel.
Salad House is a home movie. I am not referring to that perpetuum mobile, to those amateur videos that are permanently, framelessly, aimlessly shooting family life as if it were a zoo. No, I mean it in the literal sense: a movie about home. About that what is close and dear to its filmmaker. It is in the home that we discover the multifaceted features of our protagonists Unobtrusively Kamel shows us the ingredients of these 'Salad Houses': the books shelves and family pictures; a replica of Pellizza da Volpedo's painting "Il Quarto Stato"; the making of pasta; the 1936 'Visit Palestine' poster (depicting old Jerusalem); the 'Umm Khulthum room' in the Tel Aviv apartment; statements like Saad's "I'm the spirit of communism"; or, one of the Israeli relatives whisperingly confiding to Nadia that her mother used to sleep naked; the many languages spoken (Arabic, English, Italian, French and Hebrew); tracing their travel-itinerary not using today's map of Israel and the Occupied Territories, but by doing this over the many Palestinian/Israeli maps produced in the second half of the 20th century, etc.
Salad House is filled with these directorial annotations, which at first look insignificant and can easily be overlooked. Yet they're at the very centre of this film.
While waiting (in vain) in Ramallah for the Israelis to re-open the Erez Checkpoint — which would enable them to visit their Palestinian brothers and sisters — Mary tries to communicate with her Palestinian friend in Gaza via webcam. On the computer they do succeed in establishing visual contact, but the sound is missing. Through this technical problem the director instantly captures and represents the harrowing situation of the Palestinian refugees caught in the Gaza Strip. Collectively punished for decades this is a people whose voice has been systematically taken away, and remains all too often unheard.
The format of Salad House is video, often hand-held, sometimes apparently clumsily out of focus shots. But all of this has its purpose and none of the shots is gratuitous. What some might see as technical shortcomings is actually part of the film's conceptual strength.
Salad House is a home movie in the sense that it looks at the 20th century history of the Middle East from the home perspective. Kamel hardly resorts to voice-over, and when she does it is not to inform or explain. She is a participating observer. So there is no authoritative narration or tone. This would endanger this strong personal project that wants to stress that no person can be reduced to single, convenient labels. Every person is more than the sum of his or her parts.

تأملات في فيلم "سلطة بلدي"

لقد سعدت جدا بمشاهدة فيلم نادية كامل "سلطة بلدي" مرتين. كانت المرة الأولى في العرض العام الأول بقاعة روابط منذ شهور، ثم شاهدته للمرة الثانية مع حضور المناقشة التي أعقبت عرضه في مؤسسة المرأة والذاكرة مساء يوم 16/12/2007، وهي المناقشة التي تمت في حضور كل من المخرجة السينمائية عطيات الأبنودي ومخرجة الفيلم نادية كامل. وبين العرضين الأول والثاني تابعت كثيرا مما كتب وقيل عن الفيلم. وقد خرجت من مشاهدتي للفيلم في المرة الأولى بإحساس بجمال الفيلم وإدراك لحساسية المخرجة ووعيها بأهمية التاريخ الذاتي وتدوين سير الحياة. وقد كان انطباعي الأساسي في أعقاب مشاهدتي للفيلم للمرة الأولى أنه مسيرة استكشاف لهوية بتراكيبها والكشف عن تعقيداتها، وقد سمعت فيه أصداء لقراءاتي في فن كتابة السيرة الذاتية والفكر النسوي، مع تتبع سياقاتها التاريخية والسياسية والفكرية في تجربة نادية الذاتية والعائلية. ولا يخفى عليّ أن مشاهدتي للفيلم للمرة الثانية كانت متأثرة بما قرأته مؤخرا من تركيز نقدي على ركن واحد محدد ومحدود من أركان تلك التجربة الإنسانية العميقة، حيث حصرت الكتابات النقدية نفسها، في معظمها، داخل معضلة الدين والسياسة، والتطبيع والمقاطعة، والمحاكمة بالتبرئة أو الإدانة. ولكنني أود الإشارة إلى جانب آخر، ربما تكون قد تكشفت معالمه لدي بفضل حيز المشاهدة الأخير في المرأة والذاكرة، حيث تبلورت في وعيي ملاحظات بشأن جانبين أعتقد أنهما يتمتعان بالصدارة في الفيلم. فإذا طبقت مفهوم هاجس الكتابة الأدبية - الذي نحاول تتبعه في النقد الأدبي - على الفيلم، يتضح لي جليا أن هاجس الفيلم الذي دفع نادية كامل إلى تصويره يتركز في قضية الهوية، وأداته هي سيرة الحياة. كما لا يغيب عني في قراءتي/مشاهدتي للفيلم إدراك الجماليات النسوية التي يحملها الفيلم. فرغم عدم وجود رسالة نسوية مباشرة وصريحة يحملها الفيلم، إلا أنه مليء بالجماليات النسوية التي تكشف عن نفسها فيما يلي: 1- التركيز على الذاكرة في صياغة رؤية تاريخية، مع تسليط الضوء على الأم وتتبع مشاعر وردود أفعال وآراء النساء على مدار الفيلم. 2- الفيلم هو مثال لسيرة ذاتية نسائية تقوم صاحبتها باستكشاف هويتها لا بالتركيز على ذاتها بل من خلال أشخاص مقربين منها، وهو ما يتمثل هنا في شخصيتي الأم وابن الأخت. وهو تكنيك معروف في نظريات السيرة الذاتية النسوية التي تلتفت إلى مساحات التداخل بين السيرة الغيرية والسيرة الذاتية. 3- إن الفيلم لا يحمل مقولة نهائية ولا يسعى إلى تبني بطولة ما أو خلقها (كما هي عادة السير الذاتية التقليدية)، بل هو عملية تتبع للتعقيدات والإشكاليات المتشابكة داخل الذات، دون ادعاء تقديم حلول نهائية لها. 4- لا تفرض المخرجة/نادية نفسها على الفيلم، كما أنها ترفض ادعاء الموضوعية. فمع تواجدها خلف الكاميرا إلا أنها تسمعنا صوتها عبر السرد، كما أنها تظهر داخل الكادر في المواقف التي تشعر فيها بأهمية تأكيد مسؤوليتها عن توجيه مسار الحدث أو تفجير موضوع ما للمناقشة أو المساهمة في صياغة قرار مصيري. وقد تطرقت المخرجة خلال مناقشة الفيلم إلى عنصر "وجهة النظر" في صناعة هذا الفيلم، وأوجه التداخل والفصل الواعي بين كادر الكاميرا ومن وراء الكاميرا، أي بين نادية ابنة ماري وسعد، وبين منظور نادية كامل مخرجة الفيلم. وهي نقطة لها أصداؤها في نظريات السرد الأدبي حيث ضرورة الوعي بمواضع التحول والنقلات بين منظور الراوية أو الراوي وبين منظور المؤلفة أو المؤلف. 5- يحتوي الفيلم على لحظات عديدة خاصة بتجارب نسائية صرفة، مثل مشهد قيام الابنة بقص شعر والدتها، وقيام الأم بتصفيف شعرها أمام المرآة، وعلاقة الوالدين، وإعداد طعام الإفطار، وطقوس عمل وجبة المكرونة سباجيتي، وغيرها من لحظات حميمة تنتمي إلى عالم النساء ربما يكون من أبرزها أيضا تلك الرابطة القوية بين ماري وسيرينا رغم مرور عشرات السنوات من البعد وإعادة إحياء تلك العلاقة الشخصية رغم الحدود التي فرضها الواقع السياسي والسياق التاريخي. وأخيرا أتقدم بالشكر إلى المخرجة نادية كامل على هذا الفيلم الجميل الذي تكشف فيه عن تناقضات وتعقيدات هوياتنا، والذي تدعونا فيه إلى تأمل ذواتنا وحياتنا، التي قد لا تختلف كثيرا – رغم تنوع تفاصيلها – عن حياة نادية وماري ونبيل ودينا وسعد وكل الشخصيات التي رأيناها أو لمحناها في الفيلم. كذلك شكر خاص جدا إلى نادية التي أدخلتنا إلى دهاليز حياتها وأشركتنا في عملية تسجيل يوميات أسرتها ومذكرات عائلتها. هالة كمال
Reflections on Salata Baladi

I have tremendously enjoyed watching Nadia Kamel’s film Salata Baladi twice. I watched it for the first time at its first screening held at Rawabit Space in Downtown Cairo a couple of months ago. I then watched it for the second time at the Women and Memory Forum screening held on 16 December 2007, followed by a discussion led by the Egyptian filmmaker Atiyat El-Abnoudy, and the Salata Baladi director Nadia Kamel. The period between the two screenings of the film witnessed the publication of a series of reviews of, and commentaries on, the film; all of which I followed closely. Watching the film for the first time left me with an overwhelming sense of the beauty of this film, as well as a realisation about its director’s sensitivity and her awareness of the importance of personal history/herstory and life-stories. My initial impression after watching the film for the first time was based on a realisation that it marked a process of identity-exploration and its complexity-revelation. I heard in the film resonances of my readings in the art of autobiographical writing and feminist thought, taking into consideration the historical, political and intellectual contexts re/presented through Nadia’s personal and family experiences. I am also aware of the fact that while watching the film the second time I was –slightly- influenced by my recent readings of the critical reviews on the film, which focused on one, limited and limiting, aspect this profound human experience. Most of the reviews and pseudo-criticism were restricted by the thematic confines of particular issues: religion and politics; political normalisation or boycott (vis-à-vis Israel) – all leading to judgemental positions, declaring Nadia either innocent or guilty! However, I would like to point out another aspect of the film that revealed itself to me perhaps influenced by the screening space at Women and Memory. Two dimensions gained prominence in my reading of the film: identity and autobiography. And as a feminist, I was spontaneously alerted to the feminist aesthetics embedded in the film; as although Salata Baladi does not carry an overtly direct feminist message, it is replete with feminist aesthetics which reveal themselves to me in the following: 1- Focusing on memory/memories in forging a historical vision by shedding light on the mother, and tracing the feelings, emotions, reactions and opinions of women’s throughout the film. 2- The film is an example of women’s auto/biography, whereby the filmmaker explores her own identity, not by focusing on herself but through zooming on her mother and nephew, in what echoes feminist theories of women’s “relationality”: identity formation through relationships. This in itself is a common technique identified in Feminist Auto/Biography, and witnessed in women’s autobiographical writings where biography merges and overlaps with autobiography. 3- The film does not intend to present a final statement, nor to create or promote heroism (as is usually the case in traditional autobiography), but it is a process in itself which traces the complexities and problematics of the Self, without claiming to offer any final solutions. 4- The director, Nadia Kamel, does not impose herself on her film, while at the same time refusing to claim objectivity in representation. Although mostly present behind the camera, her voice is heard through narration and commentary. She, moreover, appears in the cadre facing the camera in situations where she feels the importance of her visual presence to highlight her responsibility in directing the course of events, introducing a discussion, or contributing to a critical decision-making. During the discussion following the film screening, the director referred to the use of “point of view” in the process of making this film, pointing out the conscious merging or separation between the points of view of the director behind the camera and the person facing it: between Nadia Kamel the film-director, and Nadia the daughter of Mary and Saad. The “point of view” aspect here echoes literary narrative theory which emphasises the awareness of shifts in the narrator/author perspectives. 5- The film includes several instances of women’s experience, such as the scenes where the daughter trims her mother’s hair; the mother sets her hair in front of a mirror; the relationship between the parents; preparing breakfast and the spaghetti-making ritual, among many other intimate moments in women’s lives – perhaps one of which is the emotional connection between Mary and Serena which continued despite decades of separation, and the decision to renew this personal relationship across the barriers imposed by political reality and historical context. Finally, I wish to salute the director Nadia Kamel for this beautiful film in which she reveals our identity paradoxes and complexities, and through which she invites us to reflect on our own selves and lives, which might not differ much – except perhaps in detail – from the lives of Nadia, Mary, Nabil, Dina and Saad, as well as all the other persons we saw or had a glimpse of in this film. And I send a special thank you to Nadia who led us into the maze of her life and involved us in the process of recording her family memoirs. Hala Kamal

ملخص الفيلم

تتعرض مصر في القرن الواحد والعشرين لمخاطر الغرق في موجة من التعصب الديني والقومي، في اصداء "صدام الحضارات" على مستوى العالم. ولكن تتضافر في الفيلم جهود كل من ماري، الجدة، وابنتها (صانعة الفيلم) من أجل منح نبيل حفيد ماري، لمحة من البدائل الممكنة، متمثلة في قصص العائلة الممتد على مدار 100 عام من الزيجات المختلطة
بعد قرن من الهجرات المتعددة وبعض التحولات الدينية وعدد من الزيجات المختلطة، نجد أن نبيل الحفيد، مثله مثل كثير من المصريات ومصريين ، هو نفسه مزيج مصري وإيطالي وفلسطيني ولبناني مع لمسة من الأصول الروسية والقوقازية والتركية والإسبانية، كما ورث من أسلافه المسلمين والمسيحيين واليهود تاريخ سياسيا عائليا من الاشتراكية والفاشية والشيوعية والقومية والنسوية والنزعة إلى السلام
ولكن بينما تنسج الجدة طريقها عبر حواديت العائلة نجدهاتلمس ثم تواجه ثم تخوض في مخاوفها الخاصة، فيتعالى صخب الصمت المتواصل الذي يغلف فرعا من فروع العائلةفتضامنا مع الشعب الفلسطيني الذي انتزعت حقوقه المسلوبة حتى اليوم عند إقامة دولة إسرائيل اليهودية في عام 1948، قاطعت ماري عائلتها اليهودية المصرية في إسرائيل طوال 55 عاما
ألهمت الجدة نفسها بحكيها للحكايات، إضافة إلى الملاحظات الجديدة التي يضفيها عليها حفيدها البالغ من العمر عشرة أعوام، فانخرطت هي
والمحيطون بها - في جو من المحبة والعفوية - في التغلب على تناقض ينعكس في شكل واحدة من أكثر المحرمات جمودا وشراسة في مصر الحديثة

Synopsis

21st century Egypt, spurred by the rallying cries of a global clash of civilizations, risks drowning in a xenophobic frenzy. MARY, a grandmother, and her daughter (the filmmaker) join efforts to give Mary's grandson, Nabeel, a glimpse into possible alternatives: the family's 100-year history of mixed marriages.

Like many Egyptians, after a century sprinkled with multiple immigrations, a few conversions and a few mixed marriages, Nabeel is a mix of Egyptian, Italian, Palestinian and Lebanese with some Russian, Caucasian, Turk and Spanish; from his Moslem, Christian and Jewish descendants he inherits a track record embracing socialism, fascism, communism, nationalism, feminism and pacifism.

But as the grandmother weaves her way through the family fairy tales, she bumps into her own fears and the continued silence shrouding one branch of the family grows distressingly louder.
In an act of solidarity with the Palestinian people dispossessed by the creation of the Jewish state of Israel in 1948, Mary has been boycotting her Egyptian Jewish family in Israel for 55 long years.
Inspired by the telling of her own stories and the fresh perspectives her 10-year-old grandson brings to them, she and her loving, eclectic circle engage in the breaking of arguably one of the most vicious taboos in modern Egypt.

"لقد تبين لي أن بيوتنا التي نعيش فيها تحتوي على تاريخنا، وأننا نتشكل بفضل قدرة تلك الوحدات البسيطة على مقاومة المحاولات المستمرة لإفسادها". أخمت دانجور، لعنة كافكا يعود مصدر الإلهام الأساسي لهذا الفيلم إلى شيء بسيط، ألا وهو عشقي لحكايات أسرتي ورغبتي في تقاسمها مع الغير. فقد كان هذا الفيلم مشروعا للقصّ والحكي. أما الطاقة التي دفعتني في النهاية إلى الدخول في هذه المغامرة فكانت أكثر تعقيدا. إذ رأيت أمي وهي في عقدها الثامن تتقدم عليها العمر، كما رأيت ابن أختي البالغ من العمر عشرة أعوام يكبر في ظل أطباق الأقمار الصناعية من حيث يتصاعد صخب "حتمية صدام الحضارات"، فانتابني مزيج من الأمل والفزع إن حكايات أمي، التي تم نسجها عبر السنوات المائة للقرن العشرين، هي حكايات تتحدى أي فهم مباشر للأحداث التاريخية المسايرة كما نعيها، وتكاد كل قصة ان تكون استثناءا للتجانس المفتعل الذي يعلموننا أن نرى "التاريخ" من خلاله. ففي عائلتي يتم زواج بين الأديان والثقافات في اللحظة التي تبدو وكأن هذه الأديان والثقافات في حالة تنافر على الساحة العالمية. وفي عالمنا اليوم الذي يؤكد على الحدود ويفرز الأفراد بشكل مستمر تجد عائلتي نفسها محشورة داخل هويات مختزلة غير قابلة للتصالح، فوجدت نفسي في حاجة إلى تسجيل قصص عائلتي قبل أن تتحقق أسطورة محوها بالصمت وكأن حياة هذه الأفراد لم تحدث وقبل ان تغلبني نبرة اعتذارية تبريرية تجاه هذا الموروثولكن بينما كانت أمي تحكي حكاياتها، اكتشفت أن الفيلم لا يمكنه ان يبقى مجرد اجترار لماضينا الثمين، فقد وجدنا أنفسنا في مواجهة مع كتل من الإنكار والصمت. وبدون مواجهة عقد ومحرمات الحاضر لكانت حكايات أمي قد اختزلت الى حالة من الانغماس في الذات والحنين إلى الماضي. وهكذا فإن فيلمي القائم على الحكي الحكايات قد تحول الى شاهد على حكاية جديدة في طور التكوين، وهي حكاية محاولة أسرتي مرة اخرى اليوم في القرن الواحد والعشرين لإرتقاء الجدار الظالم الذي يسعى للفصل بين مبادئنا وإنسانيتنا

"It struck me that our history is contained in the homes we live in, that we are shaped by the ability of these simple structures to resist being defiled." (Achmat Dangor, Kafka's Curse)

The original inspiration for this film was simple enough: a love for my family's stories and a wish to share them. It was a story telling project. The energy that eventually propelled me into this adventure was more complicated. I saw my octogenarian mother aging and my 10-year-old nephew growing up under a shadow of satellite dishes and a rising clamor about some inevitable clash of civilizations. And a mixture of hope and fear overtook me.

My mother's stories, woven across the 20th century, confound any straightforward understanding of the historical events during which they were played out and are almost always an exception to the reductive homogeneity with which we are taught to view 'History.' In my family, religions and cultures get married when they appear to be divorcing in the global arena. In a world where my family's identities are being squeezed into irreconcilable positions, I needed to document my history before I became apologetic about it and the myth of its extinction was realized.

But as my mother told her stories, I discovered that the film could not simply be a reclaiming of our treasured past: we found ourselves colliding with pockets of denial and silence. Without confronting the taboos of our present, my mother's stories were reduced to self indulgence and nostalgia. And so my story telling film became a witness to a new story still in the making -- a story about my family's efforts to once more climb the wall that unjustly insists on separating our principles from our humanity.

ولدت نادية كامل المخرجة المصرية، في القاهرة سنة 1961 حيث تواصل حياتها وعملها. وهي ابنة والدين عملا بالصحافة ولهما تاريخ طويل من العمل السياسي، فنشأت نادية كامل في بيت منغمس في السياسات التقدمية وشغوف بالفنون والثقافة الشعبية. وقد درست في مجال الكيمياء والميكروبيولوجي قبل ان تتمكن من توجيه كل طاقتها إلى عشقها الدائم لفن السينما في عام 1990. ومن خلال عملها كمساعدة إخراج لرواد في صناعة الأفلام المستقلة في مصر المعاصرة، ومنهم عطيات الأبنودي ويوسف شاهين ويسري نصرالله، حصلت نادية كامل على قدر كبير من الخبرة والتجربة في صناعة كل من الأفلام التسجيلية والروائية. وعندما بدأت في العمل على أولى مشروعاتها في عام 2000، ايقنت نادية كامل أن ساحة الإنتاج المصرية متشبعة وليس بها الا سوى هامش لا يذكر للمخرجات والمخرجين الجدد وللموضوعات غير التقليدية. فتوصلت إلى أن تناول الموضوعات الجريئة التي تتطرق الى الطابوهات والمحرمات، يقتصر وجودها على هوامش الخطاب المصري التقليدي وهي الموضوعات بذاتها التي كانت تأمل نادية كامل أن تناقشها ي مشروعاتها. فالمسألة اذا تتطلب منها المجازفة بإنتاج أفلام خاصة بها محدودة الميزانية. وقد تم إنتاج فيلمها الأول، سلطة بلدي، من هذا المنطلق وبروح الاستقلال التام. وبعد مرور خمسة أعوام من العمل المنفرد، انضمت إليها شركتان مشاركتان ("لي فيلم ديسي"، و"ڤينتورا فيلم") في استكمال انتاج هذه الحكاية العائلية التي تحتفي وتتمسك بقرن من التفتح على الثقافات والتعددية المصرية.

Short Bio

Egyptian filmmaker, Nadia Kamel was born in 1961 in Cairo, where she continues to live and work. The daughter of journalist parents with a long history of political activism, Kamel grew up in a house steeped in progressive politics and a passion for the arts and popular culture. She studied microbiology and chemistry before turning her full attention to her life-long romance with the cinema in 1990. Working as an assistant director to leading independent filmmakers in contemporary Egypt including Atteyat El-Abnoudy, Youssef Chahine and Yousri Nassrallah, Kamel has considerable experience in the making of both documentary and feature films. When Kamel first began to work on her own projects in 2000, she found that a saturated production scene left little space for new directors and unconventional topics. Eventually, she concluded that addressing the daring, often taboo topics, confined to the margins of conventional Egyptian discourse that she hoped to engage with in her projects, she would need to take the risk of producing her own low-budget films. Salata Baladi [A House Salad], her first film, has been produced in this spirit of indomitable independence. After nearly five years of working solo, she was joined by co-producers Films d'Ici and Ventura Films in the post-production of this family tale celebrating a century of Egyptian cosmopolitanism.
